Hyperbilirubinemia is a common condition and is usually benign in term and late preterm newborns. Developing a standardized approach for all newborns to prevent, identify, and manage those with clinically significant hyperbilirubinemia will minimize the potential risks of long-term neurological sequelae from acute bilirubin encephalopathy and kernicterus. This statement provides recommendations on universal screening.
