Official Canadian Paediatric Society document (2018) on “Risk of acute hyponatremia in hospitalized children and youth receiving maintenance intravenous fluids”. Hospital-acquired acute hyponatremia is increasingly recognized as a cause of morbidity and mortality in children. It has been attributed primarily to the use of hypotonic intravenous (IV) fluids to maintain fluid and electrolyte requirements.
